Brendan Fraser is heading back into the world of ancient curses and dangerous tombs, and now we finally know what the new Mummy movie is called. The fourth film in the franchise has been officially titled The Mummy: Book of the Dead, with a U.S. theatrical release set for October 15, 2027. The announcement also gave fans their first look at the movie’s official logo. It’s been a long wait to see Fraser back as Rick O’Connell, and this new chapter will bring him back to the role nearly two decades after his last appearance in the series.

The title and release date were revealed through the official The Mummy account on X. The film is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo known as Radio Silence, with Fraser returning alongside Rachel Weisz as Evelyn O’Connell. Weisz skipped 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, so having her back is a pretty big deal for fans who have been hoping the new movie would bring the original pair together again.

The title itself should feel familiar to anyone who remembers the first film. The Book of the Dead played a major part in the mythology of the original The Mummy, with its ancient spells and ability to bring the dead back to life setting off much of the trouble Rick and Evelyn found themselves in. It makes sense that the new film would revisit that part of the franchise, although the title alone doesn’t tell us exactly where the story is going. Plot details are still being kept quiet, so for now, any guesses about what the book will unleash are just that.

The Mummy: Book of the Dead: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Are Back

For many fans, the most exciting part of this announcement isn’t the title or even the release date. It’s the reunion of Fraser and Weisz. Fraser became closely associated with Rick O’Connell after the 1999 original and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns. Rick was an action hero, sure, but he also had a sarcastic streak and a knack for getting himself into situations that were well beyond his control. That mix was a big part of what made the films work.

Weisz’s Evelyn was just as important to the series. She brought the archaeological knowledge and curiosity, but she was never simply the person standing around waiting for Rick to rescue her. Her wit and determination helped make the pair such a good match on screen. In the third movie, the role went to Maria Bello, and the absence of Weisz was something longtime fans noticed. Bringing her back gives the fourth film a chance to recapture some of the chemistry that made the first two movies so popular.

There are other familiar faces expected to return, too. John Hannah is set to reprise his role as Jonathan Carnahan, Evelyn’s brother, while Oded Fehr is returning as Ardeth Bay. Kevin J. O’Connor is also expected back as Beni Gabor. Michael Johnston and Numan Acar have joined the cast in new roles, though the filmmakers haven’t revealed much about their characters yet.

The screenplay comes from David Coggeshall, with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett handling the direction. The pair have made a name for themselves with horror films such as Ready or Not and the newer Scream movies, where they mix violent set pieces with dark humor and plenty of tension. That background could give The Mummy a slightly different feel this time around. The franchise has always had its share of scares, but the first two films also knew when to have fun with the adventure rather than take every ancient curse too seriously.

As for the story, there’s still a lot we don’t know. Book of the Dead certainly points back toward the Egyptian mythology that helped launch the franchise, but there’s been no confirmation that Imhotep will return or that the new film will directly revisit the events of the original. We also don’t know what threat Rick and Evelyn will face, or how the book itself fits into the plot. Until more details arrive, it’s probably best not to read too much into the title.

The film also gives Fraser another chance to revisit one of the roles audiences still associate with him, following his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale. Rick O’Connell is a very different character, of course, but Fraser’s return feels like a reunion fans have been waiting a long time to see. And with Weisz back alongside him, the new movie has a connection to the original films that the third installment didn’t quite have.

The Mummy: Book of the Dead is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on October 15, 2027. International release dates have not yet been announced. For now, the title and the returning cast are enough to get the conversation going, though fans will have to wait a little longer to find out what kind of adventure Rick and Evelyn are walking into this time.
