Gabriel Basso has found his next TV project, and it’s a pretty different kind of thriller from the one that made him a familiar face to Netflix viewers. The actor, best known for playing FBI agent Peter Sutherland in The Night Agent, has joined Guilty Creatures, an upcoming true-crime series for Apple TV+. Instead of chasing government conspiracies and trying to stop international threats, Basso will be part of a story built around a real murder case, a secret affair and the kind of guilt that doesn’t simply disappear with time.
According to Deadline, Basso will appear as a series regular, though details about his character haven’t been revealed yet. He’s joining a cast that includes Julia Garner, Lewis Pullman and Maddie Hasson, with Mary-Louise Parker appearing in a recurring role. The series is based on Mikita Brottman’s book Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, Florida. Craig Gillespie is set to direct, Stuart Zicherman will serve as showrunner, and Sarah DeLappe is adapting the book for television.
It’s an interesting next step for Basso, especially with The Night Agent nearing its end. Peter Sutherland’s story has largely revolved around espionage, political intrigue and threats that can put entire governments at risk. Guilty Creatures sounds much more personal, with its focus on relationships, religious beliefs and the secrets people try to keep hidden. Basso hasn’t revealed much about his role yet, but the project gives him a chance to explore a very different sort of thriller.
The True-Crime Story Behind Apple TV+’s Guilty Creatures
The series is based on real events in Tallahassee, Florida, and centres on a secret affair between two young people who are deeply religious. Their relationship eventually leads to a murder, with the truth remaining hidden for eighteen years. That long stretch of secrecy is a major part of the story, which looks at how desire, faith and guilt can become tangled up in ways that are difficult to escape.
The subject matter gives the show plenty to dig into beyond the crime itself. It’s not just a question of what happened or who was responsible, but also what people tell themselves when they’re trying to live with something they know is wrong. With Julia Garner, known for Ozark, and Lewis Pullman, who appeared in Top Gun: Maverick, among the cast, Guilty Creatures has some strong names attached to it. The creative team also has experience with projects such as Bodies Bodies Bodies, I, Tonya and Your Friends & Neighbors, suggesting the series will put as much emphasis on its characters as it does on the murder at its centre.
The Night Agent Season 4 Will Be the End of the Line
Basso’s casting comes as The Night Agent prepares to say goodbye. Netflix has confirmed that Season 4 will be the show’s final season, with the last chapter expected to arrive in 2027. Production on the final episodes has wrapped, and creator Shawn Ryan has said the series will bring Peter Sutherland’s story to a proper conclusion.
The show has been a major part of Basso’s career in recent years, turning him into one of Netflix’s recognisable thriller leads. Moving on to Guilty Creatures gives him something different to work with, particularly if the series leans into the complicated psychology behind its real-life story. There’s no release date for the Apple TV+ drama just yet, and details about Basso’s character remain under wraps.
For now, viewers can catch the first three seasons of The Night Agent on Netflix while waiting for its final season in 2027. Guilty Creatures is still in the works, but with its cast and disturbing real-life premise, it’s already shaping up to be an intriguing follow-up for Basso.
