The Odyssey Drops Out of the Box Office Top 15, but Its $1.789 Billion Run Is No Less Impressive

After three months in theatres, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is finally losing some ground at the North American box office. That’s hardly surprising for a film this far into its theatrical run, especially with new releases arriving every week. Still, slipping to 17th place in its fourteenth weekend is quite a different story from the film’s overall performance. Matt Damon’s adaptation of Homer’s epic has reportedly made $1.789 billion worldwide, putting it among the biggest box office successes in recent memory.

According to Box Office Mojo, via ScreenRant, the film earned $550,000 over three days in North America this past weekend. That’s a 74.4% drop from the week before, when a return to IMAX theatres gave it a brief boost and pushed it back up to ninth place. This time, it fell out of the Top 15 altogether, with new releases including Street Fighter, You Can See Everything and Whalefall drawing audiences elsewhere. It’s the second time the film has slipped out of the domestic Top 10, but at this point, there’s not much reason to read too much into the decline.

The Odyssey Has Already Had a Huge Box Office Run

The drop was always going to happen eventually. The Odyssey spent ten straight weekends in the domestic Top 5 and stayed in the Top 10 for eleven weeks, which is a pretty remarkable run for a film that has been in theatres for more than three months. Now, it’s gradually making way for its home release. The film is scheduled to arrive digitally for purchase and rental, as well as on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, on November 17, 2026.

But the theatrical numbers are what really matter here. With a reported production budget of around $250 million, The Odyssey was estimated to need roughly $625 million worldwide to break even. Its reported $1.789 billion gross puts it comfortably beyond that figure. The film has also become Universal Pictures’ highest-grossing movie of all time and the biggest box office success of Nolan’s career.

A big part of the appeal was the chance to see the film on the largest screen possible. Nolan has long been a supporter of theatrical filmmaking, and The Odyssey was heavily promoted as the first feature shot entirely using 70mm IMAX cameras. That gave audiences a reason to head to cinemas rather than wait for a home release, particularly during the film’s early weeks. The IMAX run also reportedly set a box office record for the format.

Of course, a film can’t stay near the top of the charts forever. Even major hits eventually lose screens as newer releases arrive, and The Odyssey is now reaching the stage where its theatrical run is winding down. The latest drop may look dramatic on paper, but it doesn’t change what the film has already achieved.

With its worldwide gross sitting at nearly $1.8 billion, The Odyssey has had a run that few films ever manage. Its time near the top of the weekly charts may be coming to an end, but the box office story is already a remarkable one. For Nolan, it’s another major commercial success, and for Universal, it’s a record-breaking release that has clearly found an enormous audience around the world.
